Year 4 Focus

Class Information

The teaching team in Year 4 are Miss Steele (KS2 Lead and Barn Owls teacher), Mrs Colegate (Barn Owls Teacher) and Mr Pote (Merlins Teacher). The team will also be supported by Mrs Pearman and Mrs Lyness.

If you wish to pass on any messages or have any questions, the teachers are available from 3.20pm every day. If you have a message in the morning, please do this through the office and the message will be passed on. Could we please remind you that you should not be entering the school unless you have been signed in through the school office and have been given a visitors tag to wear- this is for safety reasons.

As we move to the warmer weather, please ensure that your child wears sun cream and a hat to school and brings a full water bottle each day.

Please also be reminded that the children in KS2 need to bring their own snacks for break time – fruit or a healthy cereal bar would be perfect to prevent them from getting hungry during their morning learning!

Information for Parents – Summer 2022

This term in Literacy we will be using a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts as inspiration for our own writing including The Paperbag Prince, Roman Quest, Firebird and Myth Atlas. We will be focusing on describing characters and settings, using speech punctuation and extending our use of expanded noun phrases and adverbial phrases. Our class read for this term is The Borrower’s by Mary Norton.

In Mathematics, the children will be focusing on developing their fractions and decimals knowledge, measuring and converting measures, using negative numbers and practising the formal methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Building Learning Powers

This term we will continue to use the Building Learning Powers vocabulary to help the children talk about their learning, in line with the school's behaviour policy. Children will be rewarded with plenty of house points, R star awards and golden pupil certificates if they show these learning behaviours exceptionally well.

The Romans: Settlements

During this history and geography based topic, children will explore the impact of the Roman’s on modern life and how our lives were influenced. They will learn about geographical locations of countries in the Roman Empire, as well as undertaking a field study of Exeter. The children will also use a range of historical sources to understand about daily Roman life in Britain, the Roman invasions and key historical figures such as Julius Caser and Boudicca. The children will develop their research skills to find out about life during this time period. In art, children will be designing and making a clay pot using a range of clay techniques.

HOME - SCHOOL LEARNING

Reading: It is expected that children will bring home their accelerated reader book from school and read this on a daily basis. At school, they will then take a quiz on their book, so it would be beneficial to your child/children if you could ask them questions about what they have read in order to support their understanding of the book.

Mathematics: It is expected that children will practise their mental recall of multiplication and division facts up to 12 x 12 on a daily basis at home using the Times Table Rockstars as well as practising their current Rainbow Maths Targets. In June, all Year 4 children will take a national, statutory multiplication test where they will need to recall multiplication facts up to 12x12 within six seconds.

Spellings: Children will bring home a list of ten spellings each week that will need to be learnt ready for a test the following week.

Topic Work: Please see below a copy of the ‘Menu’ of optional activities that your child may choose to complete. These activities are intended to provide the opportunity for you and your child to learn together and extend knowledge in the topic area. There will be no written feedback for this work; however, children are encouraged to bring in their learning and share with the class. The children’s learning will be rewarded with lots of praise, house points and be displayed! We really want the children to feel proud of their learning achieved outside the classroom.
